Festivities in Serbia Celebrate Close of Successful CHF Economic Revitalization Program

SILVER SPRING, Md., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Serbian communities are celebrating the official close-out of the Community Revitalization through Democratic Action (CRDA) program, which CHF International has successfully managed in southeastern Serbia for the pastsix years. Made possible by the U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID), CRDA was designed to assist Serbia in its transition to a democratic society following the turbulence of the 1990s. CRDA encouraged economic revitalization through community mobilization and civicparticipation in 32 municipalities throughout Serbia, and directly improved the lives of more than 5 million Serbians.

In the municipality of Sokobanja, CRDA beneficiaries and entrepreneurs celebrated alongside U.S. Ambassador to Serbia, Mr. Cameron Munter; USAID Serbia Mission Director, Keith Simmons; Serbian government officials; mayors; and local NGO representatives. The ceremony, which was presided over by the Mayor of Sokobanja, Milisa Dinic, is taking place at the Hotel Moravica on September 4th and 5th. Festivities over the two days included a concert by Macedonian pop singer, Tose Proeski, and an exhibition of successful entrepreneurial projects for the general public.

The CRDA program incorporated a number of strategies designed to remove market constraints for small business growth and job creation, including forming business networks, promoting small- and micro-enterprises, and targeting strategic sectors within the Serbian economy.

CRDA's approach relied on closely involving each community in its own development through the formation of democratically-elected Community Development Councils (CDCs). Comprised of as diverse and representative a population as possible, CDCs were charged with identifying projects that would most benefit the entire community. Projects ranged from renovating cultural centers and primary schools, to constructing bridges, improving and purifying water supply systems, waste management, electrification projects, and much more.

CHF International assisted by providing communities with the technical assistance to plan, design, and implement their chosen projects. Through the course of the program in CHF International's area of operations in southeastern Serbia, 144 CDCs were formed, which successfully implemented 1,166 community projects.

Founded in 1952, CHF International's mission is to be a catalyst for long- lasting positive change in low- and moderate-income communities around the world, helping them to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions. CHF International has worked in over 100 countries worldwide since its inception.
